I'm Still Kickin'

I have let way too much time go by since my last post. Not a whole lot has been going on, but I'm sure I'll be able to take up some space and time with my ramblings.....

I was expecting to have a houseful of company this weekend, but Dennis, Doreen and the kids were not able to make it after all. It seems Jimmy has strep throat and I really don't get along well with that particular illness. They promised to come in a couple of weeks instead. I hope they make it. I just love having company!!!

Last week Steve brought a guest home for dinner on Thursday night. Her name is Donna. I met her when we lived in Nashville. She is from Little Rock and when Katie and Bryan moved there she made sure they had her phone number in case they had an emergency. She's a really nice lady and we had a fun evening.

We're doing a little work on the yard right now. It needs A LOT of work, but we can only do so much at one time, you know?? Right now we're working on expanding the flower bed under the kitchen window. I pulled what little grass was growing there over the past couple of weeks and tonight we went to Home Depot and bought some shrubs like the ones that are already there to round out the rest of the bed. We'll be doubling the size of that bed, and that will be really helpful to our resident grass cutter (Steve).

Also, Katie told me there will be a baby shower for her in Abilene in August. I've already purchased my plane ticket. I can't wait to go!!! In order to get the "GREAT" pricing on my plane ticket, I had to fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Unfortunately ::wink::wink:: I'll have to stay a week in order to get the price and be there for the shower. I can't wait to spend some time with Katie and Bryan. I know we'll have a good time!!

I guess that's about all I have to talk about right now. I hope I succeeded in taking up your time!! LOL......

We Had A Great Weekend!!

I sure hope everyone had a Fantabulous Fourth!! I know Steve and I did. We went with Bill and Deb on the bikes up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We stayed at the Bluffs Lodge along the Parkway. It's owned and run by the National Parks Service and was a beautiful place to stay.

Bill and Deb drove to our house on Thursday afternoon and spent the night with us. We left bright and early on Friday, the 4th. It was a beautiful day of riding and we got there just before the rain, so our trip was absolutely great. It rained really hard for a little while, but then it cleared up enough for us to sit around the outdoor fireplace in the evening. We heard a talk by a Park Ranger all about bats. It was interesting and informative. Then, once the Ranger left, the folks staying at the lodge got to know each other and we all had S'mores and other nibbles as we whiled away the evening. One lady brought out a picnic basket full of cheeses, meats and crackers, as well as the makings for S'mores. It was a really great evening. We were all like old friends by the end of the night.

On Saturday morning we got up and rode into Mt. Airy, NC. This is the home town of Andy Griffith and the town on which the fictional Mayberry was based. It is a really cute and quaint town and they really play off the Mayberry theme. There is a tour service in town that takes people around in old "Andy and Barney" police cars. One of the tour guides dressed like Barney and another dressed like Goober. We were going to go to the "Snappy Diner" for lunch, just like Andy and Barney did, but the owners were out of town on vacation, so we wound up at Leon's Burger Palace. We had a great day in town with many great memories. On the way back up to the lodge we got rained on a bit, but more importantly, we ran through fog and clouds. It made for some interesting driving conditions!!

After the rains subsided, we made our way back to the patio and outdoor fireplace for the evening. Another Ranger came and spoke on the Appalachian way of cooking. It was interesting and informative. We then turned our attention back to the fire and the S'mores. The group around the fire was very different from the night before, but we still had a great time. I don't think Bill or Steve has ever met a stranger!!



One of my new "passions" is taking up-close photos of flowers. Since I got my new fantastic camera, I've found that I can get some really great close-ups of flowers and everywhere I go I wind up with pictures of flowers. Nature is just so absolutely awesome. We left for home on Sunday morning after breakfast. Some time over the weekend Bill hit the "Grandmother of all mosquitoes". The evidence was all over his gas tank!!
The drive south was clear and increasingly hotter. Steve and I got home around 1:00 in the afternoon. I'm sure Bill and Deb didn't make it to their home until several hours later. As we were watching TV after we got home we realized that severe storms were following the exact route we followed home. Luckily, none of the rain came for us until after we were home.

This morning I went and picked the dog up at the kennel. When I brought her home I gave her a bath and she's been asleep ever since.


All in all it was a great weekend. I hope everyone else enjoyed their long holiday weekend as much as we did. And, by the way, Mike, I did tell Goober you said "Duh Huh". He knew what you meant!!

A quick walk down memory lane......

I've decided to take a page from Bill's book and share some new information mixed in with some memories. Here goes.....
The other night I was watching "The Bachelorette" on TV. Now, I don't imagine any of my brothers or my dad saw this riveting program (with the exception of, maybe, Mike, since he's outvoted at his house). One of the finalists is a professional snowboarder. I'm not sure why she's still got this deadbeat around, but that's not the point of all this...

Anyway, the bachelorette went to each guy's home to visit and the snowboarder had lots of old and new snowboards in his collection. He held up one and explained that it was the very first snowboard ever invented. He went on to explain how it was different from the snowboards of today. The first ever didn't have bindings and the "snowboarder" wasn't attached to the board. Also, the first snowboard had a rope to hold onto and the newer ones don't. He then explained that the first snowboard EVER IN HISTORY was called "A Snurfer"!!! I was so excited because I actually knew what this thing was. So, I got online and found a few things to share about the Snurfer:

I really didn't know that my brothers were such trailblazers in the industry!!! However, as long as I'm rambling on like this and strolling down memory lane, I have to say we always had the coolest toys. Let's talk about the Marxicopter, the Big Parade, stilts, unicycle, and my personal favorite, my pogo stick. I'm still the queen of the pogo stick. You can ask Katie. When we were in Brandon, she had a friend who got one and I showed them how it was done.....

Oh well, I thought in this heat-and-drought-wave some nice winter memories would be fun. Hope you all enjoyed my journey.
